What you're putting in place

They're covered for life.

If something happens to you, the people you name get a payout, generally free of income tax.* It can pay off the house and keep things running.

Your cash grows in good years.

When the index goes up, your cash value is credited up to 8.5% a year.1 In a down year, the floor protects you against market losses.

Use it while you're here.

Borrow against it for retirement, the business or a rainy day, generally without owing income tax.* Many policies also let you use part of it early if a serious illness or injury stops you working.3

Some families get back 3 to 5 times what they put in.2

Straight answers

Is it really tax-free?

Payouts to your family generally are. Money you take out is usually a loan, so you generally don't owe income tax on it. Loans charge interest and lower your cash value and your family's payout until they're paid back.*

What's the catch?

There are monthly charges, the cap limits your upside, and it can lapse if you don't put enough in. A good agent can walk you through each one.

Is it better than a 401(k)?

It's not a swap. Many people use both: a 401(k) for retirement savings, and IUL for lifelong coverage plus cash value you can borrow from. An agent can show you how they'd fit together.

How much do I need to put in?

It depends on your age and what you want it to do. Many families start between $100 and $300 a month.

Who calls me?

1. "Up to" rate is the current cap on a top-rated carrier's IUL, as of November 2026. Caps, participation rates and floors aren't guaranteed and can change. Policy charges come out every month, whatever the index does, so cash value can go down.

2. Based on an example illustration for a 45-year-old man, non-smoker, paying $300 a month to age 65, at an illustrated rate of 6.5% with current charges, comparing total cash value and policy loans by age 85 with total premiums paid. Illustrated values aren't guaranteed. Actual results depend on index performance, caps, charges, loans and how the policy is funded, and can be much lower.

3. Living benefits depend on the insurer and the riders on your policy.

*Death benefits are generally income-tax-free under IRC §101(a). Policy loans and withdrawals reduce cash value and the death benefit, accrue interest, and may be taxable if the policy lapses, is surrendered, or is a modified endowment contract (MEC). Tax treatment depends on your circumstances; consult a tax advisor.

Indexed universal life is life insurance, not an investment in the stock market, and it isn't FDIC-insured. Caps, participation rates and charges aren't guaranteed and can change. A policy can lapse if it isn't funded enough. Guarantees depend on the claims-paying ability of the insurer.
